Kollam
The famed picnic village of Kollam is located in the sprawling 200 year old campus where Lord Munroe once stated. This tourist village located along the backwater front is the main center for recreational activities in the district of Kollam. It had a boat club, a children’s traffic park in additional to an adventure club and a good hotel. The Paramparya Museum in the same premises has paintings from different parts of the country like Warli, Kalamkari and Madhubani on display along with Kerala mural art. The village is located one km from the city of Kollam.
Alumkadavu is the place where the first houseboats in the country where built. Located north of the district of Kollam, the waft of coir and woods always seem to permeate the air. Perhaps one of the reasons could be the fact that is a major center for the construction of traditional rice barges, called kettuvalloms in the vernacular, which are later modified into houseboats for tourists. The houseboats eventually take shape in the hands of skilled artisans in the village who make sure that locally available eco-friendly materials like wood, bamboo poles and coconut fiber is used in its production.
